Local search

What is NAP consistency and why does it matter?

NAP stands for Name, Address and Phone number. NAP consistency means those three details are written exactly the same everywhere your business appears: Google Business Profile, website, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Yelp, Facebook, industry directories and data aggregators. It matters because search engines and AI assistants cross-check these sources; mismatches such as an old phone number, "Street" vs. "St." in different forms, or an old suite number make them less confident, which can weaken local rankings and confuse customers. To fix it, choose one exact format, list your top 20 to 40 listings, update each one, and remove or merge duplicates. Recheck twice a year and after any move or number change. McCrawAI audits and fixes listings for clients, and we also add matching structured data to your site.

Follow-up questions

Does NAP consistency affect Google rankings?

Consistent information supports Google's confidence in your business details. It's part of local search fundamentals rather than a single ranking trick.

What if I moved recently?

Update Google first, then your website, then other listings. Keep the old address off public listings.

Should I use a different phone number for each platform?

Generally no. One main number everywhere is simpler and more consistent.
