Marketing consultant vs. marketing agency: which do you need?

A consultant helps you decide what to do; an agency mostly executes. Plenty of businesses need both, in different proportions. Here's how to tell which fits you right now.

When a consultant fits

You're not sure what's wrong, you're about to reposition or rebrand, or you've tried tactics that didn't stick. A consultant's value is judgment: what to do first, what to stop doing and what to measure.

When an agency fits

The strategy is clear and you need volume: running paid ads across channels, producing a lot of creative, or managing several platforms at once. A good agency brings specialists you couldn't hire individually.

The hybrid

Some firms, including McCrawAI, are consulting-first but also deliver the work, so strategy and execution stay connected. The trade-off: a hybrid firm is usually smaller than a full-service agency, so it's a better fit for a focused system than for a sprawling multi-channel campaign. Ask any firm, us included, who actually does the work and how strategy turns into weekly tasks.

Frequently asked questions

Is a consultant cheaper than an agency?

Not necessarily. Consultants often charge less in total because they don't carry production teams, but senior time is expensive. Compare what's included, not just the monthly number.

Can I hire a consultant and an agency together?

Yes. A consultant can set strategy and hold an agency accountable to it. Make sure roles are clear so you aren't paying twice for the same thinking.
